Recap: World IT Show 2012

This past Tuesday, I checked out theWorld IT Show(WIS) 2012 at COEX. It's a three day event, ending on Friday, May 18.

It was a good chance for me to see what's happening in the Korean IT industry all in one spot. Though there were a ton of things to see, I'll highlight just a few.

I started with theSK Telecomexhibit, where the company showcased its newtechnologyfrom from LTE, telecommunications, and NFC to smart robots. It used a "carnival" theme that included several dance performances and clowns that created a lively setting.

One stand-out technology for me was their "smart ticketing" concept. It utilizes NFC technology to make checking out movie listings and prices, as well as paying much easier. The idea is that you place your phone against the NFC tag (as seen on the "smart poster" below). From there, you can see movie times, reserve seats and pay, all from your smartphone.

SK Telecom is currently using NFC technology at its baseball stadium, where NFC tags are installed in many places like the gift shop, snack bar and parking lot.

This little guy is a smart robot, an interactive education service for children. It uses a smartphone as its"Brain"and runs on apps installed on the phone. This cuts down on the overall cost while making the robot much more flexible and expandable in terms of what it can do.

3D technology was another really big theme at this year's show, as made evident byLG's exhibit. It was 3D paradise! 3D glasses, 3D TVs, 3D video games – you get the idea.

As you can see from the picture below, LG has attempted to make 3D glasses that are actually stylish. I think they succeeded.

The 3D video games on display were neat because not only are they three-dimensional, but you don't even need a controller. Many of the games were played using just hand or body motions.

AtSamsung, I saw even more TVs. But one in particular stood out. This TV is controlled by voice or motion. For example, by opening and closing your palm, you can adjust the volume or change the channel.

All in all, it was a very interesting show and I'm pretty tech'd out for the day! I bought this lovely wireless mouse from Korean brandActtoas a souvenir of my WIS adventures.
