Jeonju Digital Project 2012 trio announced

The 13thJeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) has announced the three directors for this year's Jeonju Digital Project short film omnibus. Raya MARTIN, one of the most prominent young filmmakers of the Pinoy cinema renaissance, Vimukthi JAYASUNDARA, "a visionary poet" of contemporary Sri Lankan cinema, and Ying Liang, one of the most promising directors on the Chinese digital independent filmmaking scene.

Started in 2000, the Jeonju Digital Project is an annual production by the festival which gives KW50 million (about US $44,000) each to three directors to make short films. The completed works are then put together as an omnibus which makes its world premiere at JIFF.

These films have been invited to several international film festivals over the years, including Venice, Toronto and Locarno.Previous Jeonju Digital Project directors have includedHong Sang-soo, James BENNING, Denis COTE,Naomi Kawase, and Pedro COSTA.

Each year the festival selects directors from a different continent to work on this project and this year's directors are from Asia. Filipino director Raya Martin is working on "The Great Cinema Party", in which he will follow various behaviors of an assortment of film people who meet in the Philippines. Vimukthi Jayasundara is again exploring a pointed edge of contemporary cinema aesthetic in "Light in Yellow Breathing Space", a tale of a father in the sight of death. Ying Liang will tell a story about a mother whose son who killed six policemen in "The Isolated", which is based on a true story that happened in 2008.

The 13thJIFF will be heldApril 26 - May 4 this year.
