The tech world has started a drum roll for Samsung's latest innovation:flexible screensthat you can bend and twist without worrying about breaking. The Korean tech behemoth beat rivals to the punch by being the first to announce a launch date for this newtechnology.

Within the first half of 2013, Samsung has promised to ship its flexible displays for mobile devices. Thisnew technologywill feature OLEDs (organic light emitting diodes). It's a display technology you can already find in the company's smartphones and TV screens.

Because OLEDs are thin, they can be put on flexible substrate like plastic. Nixing traditional glass and using plastic is what makes these displays lightweight and virtually unbreakable. These flexible OLED's won't necessarily lead to roll-up phones right away, but they may allow for more fluid, less brick-like designs.

As consumer choice in smartphones and tablets expands rapidly, consumer electronics companies are racing to differentiate their products.Sony and LG Displayare also developing OLEDs, a move that makes us eager to see the technology being put to more innovative uses.

Just a few months ago, AT&D brought you news about working prototypes offlexible lithium ion batteries. Created by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, these are bendable, high-capacity batteries used to power smartphones and laptops.

Flexible displays for phones are great, but why stop there? With flexible batteries in development, let's bring on the aforementioned roll-up tablets, lighter electriccars, and smart clothing, too!
