Hyolyn Delivers Summertime Anthem In 'Bae' Music Video
South Korean diva Hyolyn returns with her latest Summertime jam, “Bae.”
A feel-good pop song with brassy instrumentals and a bright, retro-inspired melody, "Bae" is Hyolyn's third single of 2018, and follows last month's "See Sea," which debuted on the World Digital Song Sales at No. 5. Like all of the singer's work, it thrives on her coy vocals and even takes a step back momentarily from its infectious, breezy rhythm for her to serve up a sassy rap.
The video for "Bae" takes Hyolyn to an old-school diner, where she and the Crew dance around, enjoying a float or two before they transition to the bottom of a swimming pool and hit up the pavement where they enjoy the summer sun as they take in some playful choreography that fits perfectly with the song’s melody and lyrics.
The song is different from much of Hyolyn’s recent output, the majority of which have had hip-hop and R&B vibes, but feels like a callback to Sistar’s typical Song of Summer. This is no surprise thanks to it being produced by frequent Sistar collaborators Duble Sidekick, and it’s a nice touch as Hyolyn continues to develop her identity as a soloist.
Hyolyn debuted with K-pop girl group Sistar back in 2010, through which she rose to fame for her powerful vocals and the group's seasonally-inspired summertime hits. Following Sistar’s break-up last year, Hyolyn has gone on to pursue a solo career and is currently managed by her own company, Bridʒ.
