F.T. Island( Korean :에프티 아일랜드, or FT아일랜드, Japanese : エフティー・アイランド; stylized asFTISLAND), also known asFive Treasure Island, is a South Korean rock band formed by FNC Entertainment in 2007. The band consists of Choi Jong-hoon (leader, guitar, and keyboard), Lee Hong-gi (main vocals), Lee Jae-jin (bass and 2nd vocals), Song Seung-hyun (guitar, vocals, and rap), and Choi Min-hwan (drums and sub vocalist).Oh Won-bin left the group in 2009, and was replaced by Seung-hyun. They have one sub-unit, F.T. Triple (A3), consisting of Jong-hoon, Jae-jin and Min-hwan, but it has been inactive since 2012.F.T. Island debuted in Korea on June 7, 2007, with the song, "Love Sick" on the music television program, M! Countdown . The band's Korean debut was successful; their debut album, titledCheerful Sensibilitywas the sixth best-selling album in 2007. Their debut song "Lovesick" topped the K-Pop charts for eight consecutive weeks.Moreover, they also won the Best New Male Group in the Mnet Asian Music Awards and the Popularity and Newcomer Awards in the Golden Disk Awards in 2007.The band then debuted in Japan a year later, on June 8, 2008, with the EP,Prologue of F.T. Island: Soyogi. However, it was met with limited success - it peaked at the 95th position in the Japanese charts and experienced sluggish album sales. It was not only until their third Japanese studio album,Five Treasure Islandwith the title track "Flower Rock", which made them as successful artists in Japan. The album achieved 1st position in chart ranking sales and sold more than 45,000 copies in Japan. They are also the first Foreign Male Band to top the Oricon Daily Charts, which is the first band to top it in 42 years.In 2009, F.T. Triple was formed and they released their first single "Love Letter" in the same year. The band then promoted the single on various music programmes in Korea. F.T. Triple has also performed in F.T. Island's concerts such as Men's Stories in 2010, and sang the OST "Don't You Know" for the drama Master of Study . Main vocalist Hong-gi made his solo debut in both Korea and Japan with a mini album and a full album respectively. The Korean album was titled asFM302, and the album was released on November 18, 2015,while the Japanese album was titled asAM302, which was also released on December 9, 2015.F.T. Island has released sixteen full-length albums, eight mini-albums, many singles and soundtrack productions for different drama theme songs and anime openings. F.T. Island is considered to be South Korea's first instrumental idol band.The band had also won various prestigious awards such as the Golden Disk Awards and Seoul Music Awards , and held more than 10 different tours since debut.

2007–08: Debut withCheerful Sensibilityand Japanese Debut withPrologue of F.T. Island: Soyogiedit

, was released on June 7, 2007. Prior to that, the members appeared on the Korean television show "Wanna be my girlfriend?" ( Korean :두근두근 여친만들기) on Mnet . The band also performed live on stage at Rolling Hall and held their first official showcase at Live House Melon-AX, Gwangjang-dong in Seoul on May 27, 2007.

, who composed a variety of pop rock songs.Selling over 79,000 copies in 2007, it was the sixth best-selling album of the year.The album was later re-packaged on December 3, 2007, titled,The Refreshment (Vol. 1.5)with three extra songs, a photo book, a stack of photo cards and a mixing program called Music 2.0, which allows one to adjust the levels of the instruments and vocals. The edition sold 25,724 copies in December 2007.

F.T. Island's first Japanese debut album, titledPrologue of F.T. Island: Soyogi, was later released on June 7, 2008. The album consists of eight songs, two of which were newer versions of the original songs "F.T. Island" and "Primadonna". The last track, "Always Be Mine", is an English version of "First Kiss" from their debut album (though the lyrics are original). Music videos were also released for "Soyogi" and "Friendship", displaying the band's professionalism and playful sides.

After their promotional activities in Japan, the band then returned to Korea releasing their second Korean albumColorful Sensibilityon August 27, 2008. A follow-up epilogue,Colorful Sensibility Part 2, was later released on October 17.

The single was also the last official release with member Oh Won Bin before his departure.

2009–10: Lineup changes, F.T. Triple and Breakthrough in Japanedit

F.T. Island also toured parts of Asia which included Singapore, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, and others to promote themselves in the summer of 2009. The showcase kicked off in Singapore during June 25 to 27.

F.T. Island tried out a variety of music styles forCross & Change; it included a total of 12 songs, ranging from moving ballads to addictive songs with a bright melody. F.T. Island adopted a new fashion style and concept for the album using a "retro" and the “Bokgo” approach, which was inspired during the “jeans jeans look” from the 80s in Korea.

They also performed at the international rock festivalSummer Sonic 2010in Maishima Arena , Osaka , Japan .

About 10,000 fans turned up at their promotional events in Osaka and Tokyo on 20 and 21 November.

Beautiful Journeyconcert had exceeded a total of NT$20Million.[citation needed]They have been named the Korean artists who earned the most money in the end of 2010.[citation needed]Four main news agencies namely, China Times, Yonhap News, Apple Daily and Liberty Times wrote news on the concerts, showing the band’s high popularity. F.T. Island also broke several records in Taiwan with 500,000 hits on mobile downloads and 10,000,000 hits on music downloads.

2011–12: Continued Japanese popularity,Returnto Korea and rising popularityedit

Their title song "Satisfaction" was also selected to be the ending theme song of Fuji Television 's anime Toriko .

The album features songs from their previous singles such as "Flower Rock", "Brand New Days", "So Today...", and "Satisfaction"; it also contains several new tracks, including the soundtracks for Japanese dramaMuscle Girl!, in which member Hong-gi played the lead male role. The album ranked first at the Oricon album daily chart.

. The album was released on May 24. Title track was "Hello Hello", a fast-paced rock song. The album featured five songs in total. "I Confess" featured all of the members' vocals.

F.T. Island also achieved the "Triple Crown" recognition for "Severely" on JTBC 'sMusic On Top. "Triple Crown" is a recognition for any artist who have won a music programme three times consecutively and the song would be removed from further trophies.

In April, the band returned to Japan to promote their 7th Japanese single " Neverland ", which was released on the 18th. “Neverland”, a fast tempo rock song, was chosen as the opening theme song of the animation Ozuma, a celebration of the 20th anniversary of Japanese broadcasting system WOWOW.

2013–14: Japanese album, overseas activities, comeback in Korea, individual promotionsedit

Modern Farmer.and released his new accessory brand Skullhong.Hongstargramwas also released as a travel book where he took pictures in his first solo tour in different countries.Jong-hoon was later announced in a new upcoming drama “Heroes”, said to premiere in 2015.He also launched his first Art Expedition In Japan where he showcased his artworks to the public.Jae-jin starred in Fashion Killa alongside Hong-gi as a special guest[citation needed]and also sang the title song for Bride of the Century, where member Hong-gi was starring in the drama.

2015–present: Success with first fully self-composed album and pursuing a new genreedit

They started the year with their World Tour called2015 FTISLAND [FTHX] Tourwhich included concerts in France, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and two dates in the United States, one in New York and one in Los Angeles.

Island sold 31,000 copies of the album peaking in 7th position for the highest number of album copies sold in the entire month of March."Pray" was also a huge success in China as they were awarded theMost Popular Band in Asia, one of the three major awards in that event. The members could not attend the event, but gave a video recording to thank fans for receiving the award.F.T. Island next tour was titled asWe Willwhich was held in China, Japan, Taiwan and more.

The official M/V was released on YouTube on April 18. "Primavera" is a rock ballad song which means "spring" in Latin. In the album, it contained 10 fully self-composed songs where "Fish" was included in the album as an acoustic version. The album was also separated into 4 different sets. The first set contained only the songs whereas the second contained miscellaneous such as the official music video; the last two sets contained different performances for their Summer Sonic concert last year.F.T. Island also celebrated their 5th Japanese anniversary with various tours and sang songs from their new album. It was a major career breakthrough as it received many good international praises and both the Korean and Japanese album brought a huge impact to viewers around the world.

The band then held an autumn tour in 13 different countries within 32 days. The tour consisted of Nagoya, Osaka and Sendai, and many more.

An Arena Tour was also held, titled LAW of FTISLAND: NWU. The tour was held in Osaka, Tokyo and Aichi.The tour was then extended to have another concert in Nippon Budokan Tokyo after gathering hot responses.

This was the band's first top 5 entry in this category and it was the best selling K-pop album in that week of its release.The band still managed to maintain the top 10 position for the next week, at the ninth world's best selling album.[citation needed]The album also charted at 1st in the Gaon Album Chart for the week of July 23.In an interview with the band, the band was asked why they wanted to pursue rock genre again, in which Hong-gi answered, "We threw away what is popular. We showed you popular rock for the past 8 years. In our 9th year, we started to slowly show you the music that we want to do. Lately, it’s hard to find band music on music charts. We wanted to show how we changed based on the fame we earned through popular music."

The song also came atop in Tower Records Japan for the top 10 k-pop singles and albums for the second week of September.
