"The Legend of the Blue Sea" Episode 18

Episode 18 of "The Legend of the Blue Sea" crams everything into one very tumultuous episode. Joon-jae reels from his father's death. Arrests are made. Accusations are cast. Past incarnations are revealed. Fate swings a heavy fist.

Compared to the pacing of the rest of the drama, episode 18 felt quite heavy-handed. We learn that Ji-hyeon's previous incarnation did cast the death throw for Dam-ryeong and his anger and jealousy of Joon-jae causes him to repeat those actions, or so the cliffhanger leads us to believe. Those last seconds would've been so much better had we seen more of Ji-hyeon and learned to understand him. His character has been so choppily developed. His relationship with his mother is difficult to palate because we haven't seen enough or the goodness between them. Even the sequence of events from Ji-hyeon's mother's near escape to her final arrest seemed forced. It was rushed and felt ill-planned.

What I did appreciate was Nam-doo defying the path that everyone thought he'd take: he choose Joon-jae, not money. That was a satisfying reversal. I want to see how he treats Cheong now that he has made that decision.

The romance between Tae-oh and Si-ah is thrown into the mix with very little relevancy except to say that it is cute. Other than that, neither character in love does anything for the story. Tae-oh at least lends his expertise to Joon-jae's operation. Si-ah has long become a stale character.

Also, what happens to Cheong and her heart? It was paining her a few episodes ago, but we haven't heard anything about it since. Dae-yeong was conspicuously absent from the episode save for in flashback. So many loose-ends to tie up.
