The producers of the movie"Spirits' Homecoming", which depicts the plight of Korean sex slaves for Japanese troops during World War II, donated proceeds of W500 million from the movie to charity (US$1=W1,138).

The money goes to the House of Sharing, a shelter for the surviving victims, and the Foundation for Justice and Remembrance for the Issue of Military Sexual Slavery by Japan.

Production company JO Entertainment delivered the donation to the House of Sharing in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province on Thursday.

"It's natural for us to donate proceeds from the film, which was produced with crowdfunding, to the cause of the sex victims", the company said. "We are trying to produce cultural evidence so the world can remember the victims".

DirectorCho Jung-raehad the idea for the movie as long ago as 2002, when he saw a drawing by former sex slave Kang Il-chool while he was doing volunteer work at the House of Sharing.

He wrote and rewrote the screenplay for about a decade but could find no funding.

In the end he raised half the budget through crowdfunding. It has drawn 3.58 million viewers since it opened in February.

ActressSon Sook, who plays the lead in the film, and producers Lim Sung-chul and Park Gwi-hyun delivered the money to the shelter.

Cho had to miss the event because he is in Japan to promote the movie there.

The producers said that they pledged any profits from the film to the victims because it is based on their own tragic stories. They promised another W500 million.

Aspecial DVD of the movieis to be released on the occasion of Liberation Day next month, and proceeds from the sale will also be donated.
