LG U+ develops CCTV system with in-built LTE

After CCTV footage capturing several child abuse incidents at day care centers outraged the nation, LG U+ said Thursday it has developed a CCTV system that can be used by parents with young kids.

The CCTV equipped with in-built wireless LTE is the first of its kind in Korea and can transmit full HD footage in real time to smartphones, LG U+ said.

The nation's No. 3 mobile carrier expects that the CCTV will be useful when installed at child care centers, as well as at other companies that need surveillance technology.

"As the CCTV can film children at day care by following them as they move, it will be a great help to prevent child abuse", said a spokesman for LG U+. "It can also be used to monitor crime, disasters, littering, illegal parking and so on".

The system has an LTE module inside the CCTV so that users can easily move the camera when needed.

It also provides a function that screens for intruders and one that automatically counts the number of people moving around in one place, the company said.

It has been difficult to connect existing CCTV systems to the LTE network as users had to separately install an LTE router and hook it up to a wired network. If any of the devices malfunctioned, whether the LTE router or the CCTV itself, the whole system failed to work properly.

Industry insiders say that the demand for CCTV and related services will likely increase after the government and ruling Saenuri Party proposed to make it mandatory for child care facilities to have CCTV cameras.

The main opposition also announced on Thursday that it agrees with the plan. The bill is likely to be passed in the National Assembly next month. kjy@joongang.co.kr [BY KIM JUNG-YOON]
