Domestic Violence Rises Over Traditional Holidays

Domestic violence has steadily increased over the big traditional holidays in the last three years, according to police data handed to lawmaker Lee Chan-yeol this week.

Incidents reported during Lunar New Year and Chusoek, or Korean Thanksgiving, rose from 7,737 cases in 2014 to 10,622 last year.

It occurred most commonly at night, with 44.3 percent of reported cases taking place between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m.

"In many cases a drink or two at dinner lead to an argument and physical altercations", a police spokesman said.
