Art Installation on Seokchon Lake Attracts Over 1 Million Visitors

An art installation floating on Seokchon Lake in eastern Seoul has attracted over 1 million visitors since it was set up last week.

The artwork named "Super Moon" by American artists Sam Borkson and Arturo Sandoval is 20 m in diameter and depicts a full moon with a smile. Lotte has been displaying such giant artworks on the lake, after displaying a world-famous rubber duck -- a conceptual artwork -- and 1,600 pandas made of recycled paper.

The Super Moon drew 1.06 million people in just six days, 330,000 more people than the rubber duck in 2014.

Some 300 pieces of fabrics were sewn into the installation at a factory in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province over the course of a year.

"We came up with the idea of making a moon because Koreans traditionally wish upon the full moon", a Lotte staffer said. "We expect the number of visitors will increase during Chuseok or Korean Thanksgiving".

The Super Moon is lit up from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. every night and will be lit gold on Sep. 15 for Chuseok to wish for good harvest, purple on Sept. 23 meaning good fortune to cheer up youngsters who are struggling amid hard times, and pink on Sept. 28, 50 days prior to the college entrance exam in November, wishing students good luck.

It will be on display until Oct. 3.
